What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you’re in pain, bleeding, or something is broken or missing, it’s worth a call. Common emergencies include:

  • A severe or lingering toothache
  • A chipped, cracked, or broken tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A lost or loose crown, filling, or bridge
  • Swelling in your gums or face, or a bump on the gums (possible signs of infection)
  • An injury to your lips, gums, or the inside of your mouth

Not sure if yours qualifies? Call us anyway. We’d rather hear from you early than late.

Emergency Treatments We Offer

The right fix depends on what’s wrong. Depending on your situation, treatment may include:

  • Root canal therapy to relieve pain from an infected or badly damaged tooth and often allow you to keep the tooth.
  • Crowns and bridges to restore a broken tooth or replace a lost restoration
  • Tooth-colored fillings for cavities and small fractures
  • Dental bonding to repair minor chips
  • Extractions when a tooth can’t be saved

We’ll explain why we recommend a particular treatment, and if a problem can safely wait, we’ll tell you.

What to Do Until You Reach Us

A few simple steps can protect your tooth and keep you more comfortable:

Toothache: Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Hold a cold compress against your cheek. Don’t put aspirin directly on your gums, since it can burn the tissue.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth, save any pieces you can find, and apply a cold compress if there’s swelling. If a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, sugar-free gum or dental wax can cover it temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth: Time matters. Call us right away, ideally within the first hour. Pick the tooth up by the crown, rinse it gently if dirty, and reinsert it if you can. If not, keep it in milk. Don’t try to reinsert a baby tooth.

Lost Crown or Bridge: Keep it and bring it with you. Don’t use household glue to reattach it. A pharmacy dental cement can hold it temporarily if you’ll be waiting for your appointment.

What Happens at Your Emergency Visit

Start by calling us and telling us what’s going on. We’ll let you know how soon to come in and what to do in the meantime. When you arrive, we examine the area and take digital X-rays as needed, so we can identify the cause of your problem.

Our first priority is getting you comfortable. We’ll numb the area as needed. Dr. Rajurs will then walk you through what’s happening, what she recommends, and what it costs before treatment begins. Depending on the situation, we may be able to finish treatment in one visit. In other cases, we’ll relieve your pain and stabilize the tooth, then schedule the rest.

The staff was wonderful from calling to schedule an appointment to checking out. Dr. Rajurs was absolutely amazing with my son. He was nervous and panicking before his procedure and she took as much time as needed to calm him down and reassure him. I am very pleased and impressed with this practice as a whole.

    Answers to Common Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?

Yes, we do our best to see emergency patients the same day, depending on our schedule and the nature of the problem. Call as early in the day as you can.

Should I wait to see if the pain goes away?

No, we don’t recommend it. A toothache can fade for a while even though the underlying problem is still there, and infections can get worse quietly. Early treatment is usually simpler.

Can I take pain medication before my visit?

Yes, over-the-counter pain relievers can help, as long as they’re safe for you and you follow the label directions. Tell us about all medications you take, including blood thinners.
